Young Motherhood in Chelsea, MA
Young Motherhood in Chelsea, MA

I am currently working with about 30 young mothers to create a body of work about young motherhood in Chelsea, MA. These are some of the photos that I have taken of them in their homes.

These are some of the photos taken by the young moms that I work with. Thanks to the Snap Foundation, I have been able to give all of the girls cameras to take pictures at home. I've asked them to photograph what their lives are like.

Erin: After 30 hours
Erin: After 30 hours

My sister is at Duke in the third year of her residency. Last year we lived together and I got in the habit of taking pictures of her when she would come home at noon or 1 in the afternoon after thirty hours of work.

Partners For Surgery
Partners For Surgery

These are photos I took in October 2006 while on a one week medical triage mission into the highlands of Guatemala. I photographed for the non-profit Partner for Surgery (www.partnerforsurgery.org) that is dedicated to providing transportation to hospitals for Maya people who live in the highlands. In Guatemala even though health care supposedly free to anyone, the truth is it is not available for the Maya people who live far from cities and make too little money to go into the cities for surgery. Partner for Surgery goes into the remotest areas of Guatemala (along with a team of doctors and nurses), identifies the people who would benefit from simple surgeries and provides immediate medical care and eventual transportation to hospitals.

I am constantly fascinated by my younger sisters. I have known them for seven years now. They were my favorite subjects to photograph when they were 9 and I was 18, and they still are.
