These are photos I took in October 2006 while on a one week medical triage mission into the highlands of Guatemala. I photographed for the non-profit Partner for Surgery (www.partnerforsurgery.org) that is dedicated to providing transportation to hospitals for Maya people who live in the highlands. In Guatemala even though health care supposedly free to anyone, the truth is it is not available for the Maya people who live far from cities and make too little money to go into the cities for surgery. Partner for Surgery goes into the remotest areas of Guatemala (along with a team of doctors and nurses), identifies the people who would benefit from simple surgeries and provides immediate medical care and eventual transportation to hospitals.
